September 2021 – Respect

Value of the Month: Respect

After being away from school for such a long time, students at Meritton British International School were excited to return to campus to see their friends and make new ones. We were approved to reopen by provincial authorities, thanks to the excellent cooperation from parents, students, and staff. To ensure a safe environment, almost all staff members have received at least one vaccination shot, and teachers continue to take weekly COVID-19 antigen tests.

Value of the Month: Respect and Welcoming Return to Campus

  • Respect is a value that all our students, teachers, and parents believe is incredibly important, and its practice could make the world a much more peaceful place.
  • We define Respect as “showing politeness and care to someone or something important”.
  • We have identified four key areas for students to practice this month: Respect for seniors, Respect for each other, Respect for the environment, and Respect for people and ideas that are different from our own.
  • The traditional Thai greeting, the ‘wai’, is a graceful way of showing respect that we encourage our students and staff to practice.

7 Tips for Nurturing Respect at Home

  1. Show your child the same respect you expect from them: We teach respect by being respectful to our children.
  2. Respect differences: It is important to teach your child to show respect even when they disagree with someone’s values or views.
  3. Respect your child’s boundaries: Allowing your child to say ‘no’ to things like going to a friend’s house to play is crucial for developing confidence and assertiveness later in life.
  4. Apologise to your child once in a while: Apologizing helps them understand the power of humility and accepting responsibility.
  5. Ask questions: When your child is rude, asking them “Why did you say that?” or “How do you think the other person felt?” helps them understand their own emotions and find solutions.
  6. Respect your child’s preferences: When a child’s preferences are accepted, they feel heard and respected, learning firsthand how to treat others with different ideas.
  7. Notice and reflect: Simple reflections like “The way you greeted our guests was so polite. Did you see how happy they were?” help them connect their actions to positive emotions.
