Sustainability Week 2025

Sustainability Week

17–21 March 2025

sustainability week

During Sustainability Week, we focused on practising and reflecting on sustainable living both at school and at home. Students observed the number of vehicles arriving at school and discussed ways to reduce emissions from car engines. They also identified high-energy-consuming appliances, such as air conditioners, and reminded everyone to switch off unused electrical devices.

Sharing is Caring

We encouraged Meritton families and staff to carpool to school throughout the week. This was a key strategy to reduce car emissions, decrease traffic congestion, and foster stronger relationships within the Meritton community. It was heartwarming to see friends sharing rides with different families and forming closer bonds after school.

Sustainable Living Seminar with Chiang Mai Nayu

Mr. Luke and Ms. Susana visited Meritton British International School to host insightful sessions and workshops for our secondary students and parents on how to live more sustainably. We were honoured to continue this meaningful initiative with Chiang Mai Nayu for another year.

Swapping Station

On Friday, the Swapping Station was bustling with students exchanging used toys, books, and clothes! These gently used items found new homes, extending their purpose and reducing waste. This initiative also provided a great opportunity for students to practise kindness and respect for others and their belongings. We hope that everyone who took home new items will cherish and care for them.

Our Veggie Garden

From Early Years to Secondary, Meritton students had hands-on experience planting and caring for vegetables. Our school now boasts beautiful, green vegetable gardens in both Early Years and Primary. Students will observe how vegetables grow, maintain their health using organic fertilisers, protect them from weeds, and enjoy the fresh taste of homegrown produce.

This activity integrates life skills and science, with Year 7 students using the compost and fertilisers they created themselves!

Food Waste Reduction and Saying No to Single-Use Plastic

“Take What You Want, But Eat What You Take”

We are committed to reducing food waste and eliminating single-use plastic, especially during Sustainability Week. We promoted the use of reusable cups, and thanks to everyone’s cooperation, this initiative was a success. This practice gave us real-life experience in being responsible for our actions and thinking mindfully before contributing to plastic waste.

Earth Hour

Let’s switch off the electricity and celebrate our veggie gardens and outdoor play! At Meritton, we all turned off air conditioners, fans, and even computers for 2 hours to participate in outdoor activities together. It was a fantastic opportunity to engage in face-to-face interactions, spark meaningful conversations, and enjoy games and playtime with friends.

A Sustainable Future Starts with Us

Sustainability Week at Meritton British International School was a meaningful and inspiring experience for our entire community. Through hands-on activities, collaborative initiatives, and thought-provoking discussions, we took steps towards a greener, more responsible way of living. From reducing waste and emissions to fostering kindness and awareness, every effort made a difference. As we move forward, we hope these sustainable habits continue beyond this special week, shaping a future where mindful choices and environmental responsibility become a natural part of our daily lives. Together, we can make lasting change—one small action at a time.
