Reading Week 2023
For a whole week from 30th January – 3rd February, we celebrated in school and libraries to promote literacy and a love of reading. We included fun school-wide activities such as “Stop, Drop, and Read”, buddy reading, guest reading, storytelling, book swapping, extreme reading photo challenge, diorama boxes, and other events designed to get students excited about books. The aim of the event is to encourage students to develop a lifelong love of reading, as well as to improve their reading skills and knowledge about books and authors.
Buddy Reading & Guest Reading
Older students paired up with younger students to read together as “Buddy Reading”. This activity provided a supportive learning environment between Meritton learners. The older student acts as a mentor and reading role model, helping the younger student to develop reading skills, improve comprehension, and increase confidence. The students work together to explore a book and discuss the content, which can help build reading skills, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills. Buddy Reading can also promote socialisation and create a positive learning experience for them.
During the lunch break, volunteer teachers and staff told stories in Thai or English to students who enjoy reading. Reading with expressions under the tree brought a story to life and engaged the children’s imagination!
Book Character Day
Last day of the week-long celebration, all Meritton students and teachers dressed up as their favourite book characters to school! There were wizards, wimpy kids, monsters, super heroes, princesses, a queen from ancient Egypt, detectives, people with special powers, legendary football players, and many more. It was one of the most fancy days at Meritton!
Our lower primary classes participating in fun and crazy Reading Week activities, such as Silly Sock Day, Wacky Hair Day, Read My Shirt Day, and Hat Off To Reading Day. Meritton’s Year 1 and Year 3 classes are so extras! And that is a good thing!
We were also thankful that Asia Books, the largest English language bookseller in Thailand, participated in the school event from Monday through Friday. Our students and parents enjoyed the pleasure of finding new books to read.
At Meritton British International School, we celebrate Reading Week annually. The event is an entertaining and educational experience for students of all ages!
