Learning Life Skills at Meritton

At Meritton British International School, learning goes beyond the classroom. We believe that children develop confidence and independence when they are given opportunities to apply their learning in meaningful, real-life situations.

As part of this approach, we are proud to deliver the Join In Award Scheme Programme for students in Years 1–6, helping them build practical life skills alongside their academic learning.

During this part of the programme, our students explored the importance of living an active and healthy lifestyle through a hands-on cooking project. Working together in small groups, they planned nutritious meals from scratch, discussed the ingredients they would need, and learned how to manage a budget before putting their plans into action.

The experience continued with a visit to Mae Hia Market, where students selected and purchased their own ingredients while practising decision-making, communication and money management in a real-world setting. Back at school, they prepared and cooked their meals together, discovering that healthy eating can be both enjoyable and rewarding.

Throughout the activity, students developed a wide range of valuable skills, including budgeting, making healthy choices, teamwork, problem-solving and independence. Experiences like these encourage children to take responsibility, work collaboratively and grow in confidence while enjoying the process of learning.

The Join In Award Scheme supports young people in developing essential life skills through engaging, practical challenges that prepare them for everyday life beyond the classroom. We are delighted to offer this programme as part of our commitment to helping every child grow into a confident, capable and responsible learner.
