Meritton Sports Day 2022
Looking back to our extremely fun Meritton Sports Day event which was held from 30th November to 2nd December. The school was finally able to get parents participating in activities with the students onsite after a long time of the epidemic. The students were reminded about the benefits of sports and the importance of fair play. The event was divided into three half days, so that parents could enjoy the time with their children on sports and have the afternoon free.
We encouraged parents to get involved and it was wonderful to see the parents and children in matching team colours. The team spirits of this year were: Red Bull; Blue Whale; Green Peacock; and Yellow Tiger. Before the games started each day, the event began with a small parade of the players walking from their classrooms to the main court. Mr. Gary, the school principal, and Mr. Craig, PE teacher, setup four key Sports Day principles as follows:
- Good sportsmanship
- Do your best
- Follow the rules
- Have fun!
Our Early Years students
enjoyed their 40 metre run, standing long jump, and bean bag throw games. For Year 1 and above, we added more challenging activities, such as, long jump, sack race, 3-Legged race, egg & spoon race, and relay race. The winning team with the highest overall scores from both Year 1 to Year 3, and Year 4 to Year 8, was the Red Bull team! We might say that red represents full energy when it comes to sports.
However, the most competitive game was chairball between Meritton parents and teachers! At some point it had become American football, since the participants played with all their might! Mr. Daniel, Year 5 homeroom teacher, was the MVP of the match.
In the end, Meritton Sports Day was not just a fun event where students could skip their classes, but it was the day that helped our students to build relationships with their family members and students from other classes. Playing sports teaches the concepts of sportsmanship and team players. Competition drove younger ones to give their all in physics, then received medals and prides as rewards. Most importantly, losing did not lead anyone to disappointment since we were all able to enjoy the moment together!
