Early Years Programme

kindergarten In the UK’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children develop through play, active learning, and critical thinking across the Seven Areas of Learning. A well-prepared classroom environment plays a vital role in creating a safe and supportive space where children can build social skills alongside peers in their age group. At the same time, values education and simple mindfulness techniques help children focus, regulate their emotions, and prepare their minds for meaningful learning.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum

EYFS is the framework for learning used widely in the UK. It sets standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old. Early years learning concentrates on 7 areas split between prime and specific areas of learning.

The prime areas of learning are:

  • Communication And Language
  • Physical Development Personal
  • Social And Emotional Development

The specific areas of learning are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding The World
  • Expressive Arts And Design

Learning Approach

At Meritton, children in our Early Years learn through:

  • Playing and exploring
  • Active learning
  • Creating and thinking critically

In addition, our Early Years programme includes:

  • Values-based Education
  • Simple mindfulness techniques
  • Thai language and cultural learning

In Nursery the children are exposed to basic letter recognition with the well proven Jolly Phonics programme. In Reception the Jolly Phonics programme is extended to prepare the children for reading and writing in Primary Year 1.

Assessment

In Early Years, assessment is ongoing and observational in nature. We use the Tapestry online program to monitor students’ progress and share this with parents on a regular basis.

When they reach Reception, students are taught phonics using the Jolly Phonics programme. Their progress is monitored according to the requirements of that programme.
