Early Years Programme
![]() |
In the UK’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children develop through play, active learning, and critical thinking across the Seven Areas of Learning. A well-prepared classroom environment plays a vital role in creating a safe and supportive space where children can build social skills alongside peers in their age group. At the same time, values education and simple mindfulness techniques help children focus, regulate their emotions, and prepare their minds for meaningful learning. |

Learning Approach
At Meritton, children in our Early Years learn through:
- Playing and exploring
- Active learning
- Creating and thinking critically
In addition, our Early Years programme includes:
- Values-based Education
- Simple mindfulness techniques
- Thai language and cultural learning
In Nursery the children are exposed to basic letter recognition with the well proven Jolly Phonics programme. In Reception the Jolly Phonics programme is extended to prepare the children for reading and writing in Primary Year 1.
Assessment
In Early Years, assessment is ongoing and observational in nature. We use the Tapestry online program to monitor students’ progress and share this with parents on a regular basis.
When they reach Reception, students are taught phonics using the Jolly Phonics programme. Their progress is monitored according to the requirements of that programme.

Early Years Parent Handbook
Our Mini Parent Handbook is designed to help new families feel confident and informed as they become familiar with the teaching approach at Meritton British International School.
Early childhood is a golden time of growth and transition, where both children and parents adjust to new routines, develop independence, and take their first steps together on a meaningful learning journey.
